In a 2012 survey conducted by the Allianz Academy of Legacies, Baby Boomers were asked to rank their priorities when it comes to passing down an inheritance.This demographic ranked passing down family history and stories as far more important than leaving financial assets to heirs. Why then have so few people made provisions for this in their will or estate plan?

“Mrs. W., what are you smiling about?” I had entered her room quietly and caught her in a private reverie. She turned her face toward me and her smile broadened. “Oh,” she replied softly, “I’m just counting my blessings.” I was overwhelmed with shame. Earlier I had been grousing about some trivial issue and here was a woman whose world had been reduced to her bed yet she was still able to find joy in life. Two years ago I lost a friend and colleague. Virginia’s death was sudden, without warning. She had been feeling great and we were making plans to move to a wonderful new office location. We looked at the space on Friday afternoon and planned to finalize the deal on Monday but by Sunday she was gone.
